Email Newsletters and RSS Usability

The king of usability studies, Jakob Nielsen and Amy Schade, of the Nielsen Norman Group, have published a 544-page study on email newsletter usability, including 165 guidelines for subscriptions, content, managing accounts and RSS-based news feeds.

Interesting to note, users in the study spent 51 seconds on average scanning a newsletter before deleting without ever opening. Meaning, if you produce newsletters as your venue for affiliate marketing, you might need to invest a little money in this report.

Dan Farber reviews the overview of the report in some detail on his blog.
